  HGN, a New 3 mm (.118'') Double-Ended, Twisted Insert For Grooving and Parting at Unlimited Depths  
  ISCAR's a new, economical, 3 mm (.118'') double-ended, twisted insert, the HGN, is designed for parting and grooving. The special geometry enables penetration to depths greater than the length of the insert. Using this narrow insert saves workpiece material, requires less machine power and forces, reduces vibration and improves stability, especially on thin walls and small-diameters. The relatively long length of the insert and the method of clamping ensure stability in the seat.

Inserts are available in a neutral shape, HGN, and in right- and left-hand configurations, HGR and HGL, respectively. The frontal clearance angles are 6° and 15° covering most of the popular applications on the market. The 15° frontal angle is used with the J chipformer and sharp corners for minimum burr size.

Inserts are available with four different chipformer styles, C, J, Y, and UT type. The C single-groove type chipformer is generally preferred for grooving and parting on steel. Machining of soft materials including low carbon steel at small feeds utilizes the J-type advantages. An additional option is the Y type chipformer for a medium range of feeds on carbon and alloy steels. On difficult-to-machine materials and materials with tendency to strain hardening like in the ball bearing industry, the UT type with its short deflector is recommended.

The new HGN/R/L inserts are all PVD coated utilizing TiCN in grades designated as IC308, IC328, and IC354. IC308 is based on a submicron substrate recommended for parting stainless, alloy steel, and high-temp alloys. IC328 is mainly recommended for machining a wide range of carbon and alloy steel and IC354, the toughest grade, is designed for interrupted cutting and heavy-duty applications.

Inserts can be mounted on the HELIGRIP blades HGFH in 26 and 32mm (1.02 and 1.26'') sizes, and on integral holders, type HELIR/L, as well as on integral boring bars, type HELIIR/L.

Using HGN inserts will improve efficiency, performance, and economy of parting operations on small diameters, thin-walled tubes, and many other applications previously machined with single-ended SELF-GRIP or other non-twisted inserts.
